Baltimore CityStamp
2007 - 20" x 32" finished size

This quilt was my response to a guild challenge. Participants were given a fat quarter of the brightly colored grid fabric that I used in my center building. Upon examining the swatch I thought - hmmm - looks like a cell phone pad, or a grid, or a building! Yes a building! I will make a sky line. I decided to take famous buildings in downtown Baltimore and make a faux cityscape.

As a graphic designer, I love type - so I was trying to figure a way to incorporate type. The main story on the news at the time was the first class mail rate increase from 39 cents to 41. That was it - a huge faux Baltimore Stamp. I really enjoyed making the piece. I decided to make the edges as inverted scallops mimicking a real stamp. I hole punched 1/8" holes ¼ inch around the whole scalloped border then crocheted a velour yarn to make the raw edge border. I would not recommend this technique! It was the cause of very sore palms after punching hundreds of tiny holes! Many people ask if this a real stamp.

This art quilt will be made into a pattern and will start a series of stamp quilts. Watch the Zebra Patterns Catalog at this site. I hear we are due for another first class postage increase in 2008. Guess it's time for another city and another stamp!
